Course Overview

The nuclear industry is central to the UK achieving its Clean growth Grand Challenge set out in the government's Industrial Strategy.

The UK's nuclear sector is among the world's most advanced and offers much for the future.

It provides highly skilled jobs for tens of thousands of staff, many based in the North West of England. But it needs more - to overcome challenges of an ageing workforce and a forecasted growing demand across all areas of the nuclear sector.

This course is designed for new entrants and existing staff who currently work within nuclear or other energy sectors who require reskilling or upskilling and would benefit from this essential introduction to nuclear safety and power generation.

This course provides an introduction to the basic concepts of nuclear power generation taking advantage of our unique half-million pound pressurised water reactor (PWR) nuclear simulator facility.

Experience practical nuclear power plant operational exercises including accident scenario simulations.

This course will cover:

  • The history and basic concepts of nuclear power generation
  • Safety of nuclear power plants, including the historic developments in safety design philosophy, influence on subsystems and lessons learned
  • Practical nuclear power plant operational experience, including simulation of accident scenarios.
