Course Overview

The purpose of this specialism is to engage with the technical expertise, technology, methods, and skills involved in producing items or assemblies (generally on an industrial scale), using specialist tools, equipment and machinery.

Students will examine a range of production processes, systems, and facilities, investigating factors such as scale, efficiency and demand, the application of quality management, and the analysis and optimisation of conditions, processes and practices when producing high-quality products for a variety of purposes.

Throughout this pathway, students will develop knowledge in:

  • Structure, properties and characteristics of common materials
  • Knowledge of general engineering
  • Mathematical and scientific principles including metallurgy
  • Knowledge of machinery and technology used in fabrication and welding
  • Knowledge of importance to continually review fabrication and general engineering processes and procedure
  • Knowledge of principles, procedures and testing of different joining techniques
  • Skills in the analysis of technical documentation, tasks, projects and specifications
  • Skills in producing products to specification using suitable methods and techniques
  • Skills in cutting and forming metal for the production of fabricated products
  • Skills in quality, compliance or testing using the correct procedures, processes and/or equipment

The skills learnt in the above section will form the engineering life cycle outlined below, and be used in the practical assessment.

Analyse and interpret engineering and manufacturing requirements, systems, processes, technical drawings and specifications.

Evaluate systems, designs, components and processes, managing and integrating design information, proposals and specifications, to develop and improve mechanical engineering and manufacturing proposals and solutions.

Propose and design mechanical engineering and manufacturing systems, products, components, processes and solutions, considering requirements, constraints and context.

Collaborate to help manage, develop, test and quality assure mechanical engineering and manufacturing design information, systems, processes and outcomes.

Communicate proposals, design information and solutions, producing, recording and explaining engineering and manufacturing representations, systems, processes, outcomes, specifications and technical drawings.

Entry Requirements

5 GCSEs grade 4 or above including English and Maths

  • A successful interview with a tutor
  • The ability to study independently
  • A genuine interest in the subject
