Course Overview

Start your journey towards becoming a fully qualified engineer with the Level 3 Triple Diploma in Engineering. Co-created with industry to allow you to develop the exact skills needed for university and/or employment, this course aims to develop a range of engineering skills. There is a strong focus on experimental and practical techniques so you learn to apply your knowledge to real industry scenarios. You will also develop your analytical and problem-solving abilities. This is a challenging and exciting course, featuring work experience and delivered by enthusiastic expert tutors all keen to support you towards success.

Entry Requirements

4 GCSEs grade 4 or above in English and Maths

  • a successful interview with a tutor

  • good communication skills
  • hardworking approach towards the industry

All 16-18 year old applicants will be invited to attend an interview to meet a tutor and ask any questions they may have about the course.

BTEC National Extended Diploma in Engineering

Essential Skills – English and Maths

If you achieve a grade 3 in GCSE Maths or English you will have to work towards re-sitting these subjects as part of your main study programme. At B&FC, this won’t delay your career journey because you’re working towards these subjects at the same time as your chosen subject.

Career Options and Progression

Successful completion of this course allows you to qualify with the Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Engineering. By completing subsequent additional units you could then progress to a degree-level course, either here at B&FC or at another institution.

Alternatively, you might choose to specialise in another area of engineering or even start work in the industry straight away. We have excellent relationships with a wide range of employers, through which we can help and support you into sustainable employment.

Assessment Methods

The core modules on this course include:

  • Engineering Principles
  • Delivering Engineering Processes Safely as a Team
  • Engineering Product Design and Manufacture
  • Applied Commercial and Quality Principles in Engineering
  • Microcontroller Systems for Engineers
  • Calculus to Solve Engineering Problems
  • Specialist Engineering Project

During each module you will undertake a range of assignments, designed to assess your skills, experience and knowledge. These will consist of practical-based studies, research, written assignments, and individual and group presentations.

Teaching and Learning Methods

Most of the teaching and learning on this course takes place in our dedicated engineering suites and computer-based classrooms.

Our expert tutors understand that everyone learns in different ways so they use a range of teaching methods to enable everyone to achieve their potential.

These include plenty of practical activities, designed to develop your understanding of key engineering principles as well as your employability skills. Guest speakers from industry provide real-life insight into your chosen career area.

Throughout the course, we will provide you with lots of individual support, including regular target setting and reviews to ensure you remain on track.

Timetabled hours per week total 13 and we will expect you to devote an additional 3 hours each week to independent study.

Practical sessions account for 60% of the taught element of this course and theory, 40%.

The course also features work experience in a relevant placement setting, study skills sessions and a personal tutorial.

All staff involved in the delivery of further education courses within the College are approved to teach the subjects and modules they deliver. The approval process ensures that staff delivering a given programme are appropriately qualified and, where appropriate, possess relevant technical and industrial experience and professional practice.
