Course Overview
Prepare for a career as an engineering technician or operative with this level 3 course. The focus is on developing your skills and knowledge in a range of electrical/electronic and mechanical disciplines as you gain an insight into the wider engineering industry. Here at B&FC, we are an enthusiastic, expert and experienced team, and fully committed to helping you develop the skills, knowledge and experience needed for your future career. Successful completion of the course will equip you to progress to a degree-level course or you might prefer to go straight into employment.
Entry Requirements
4 GCSEs grade 4 or above or Level 2 relevant qualification.
Require English OR Maths at grade 4 or above
- a successful interview with a tutor
- the ability to study independently
- a genuine interest in the subject
- good communication skills
- hardworking approach towards the industry
All 16-18 year old applicants will be invited to attend an interview to meet a tutor and ask any questions they may have about the course.

Assessment Methods
Core modules include:
- Engineering Principles
- Delivering Engineering Processes Safely as a Team
- Engineering Product Design and Manufacture
- Applied Commercial and Quality Principles in Engineering
- Specialist Engineering Project
During each module you will undertake a range of assignments, designed to assess your skills, experience and knowledge. These will consist of practical-based studies, research, written assignments, and individual and group presentations. There are also controlled exams for some modules.
Teaching and Learning Methods
This highly practical course is made up of the following
- engineering practical (workshop-based, typically 7 hours per week)
- engineering/industry theory (class-based, typically 6 hours per week)
- work experience/work placement
- higher education
- study skills tutorial
Our expert tutors understand that everyone learns in different ways so they use a range of teaching methods to enable everyone to achieve their potential.
Each week totals around 16 timetabled hours, including 3 hours’ independent study.
We provide you with lots of support, including regular target setting and progress reviews.
