There is currently a skills shortage for all types of engineers and technicians but employers are also keen to recruit those with good commercial and analytical skills. Many roles offer the opportunity to travel and work in unusual places. Starting salaries vary from £19,000 to £28,000 depending on the job type, company and location.
If you have good maths, science and practical skills, and can read engineering drawings, this role could be for you. Typical tasks include making new engine components, installing and testing machinery, carrying out preventative maintenance, and using CAD to draw up plans for new ideas. Starting salaries range from £18,000 to £23,000.
This role would suit those with good practical and problem-solving skills, and the ability to follow technical manuals. You would be expected to install and maintain mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems and equipment. Day-to-day tasks might range from installing pipework, valves, pumps and motors to responding to emergency breakdowns. Starting salaries range from £16,000 to £21,000.
This role demands good maths, science and practical skills, good problem-solving ability, adaptability and knowledge of engineering. Day-to-day tasks will involve preventative maintenance (allocating work, checking and calibrating instruments, fitting parts) and emergency maintenance (responding immediately to equipment breakdowns). Starting salaries range from £18,000 to £22,000.
For this role, you will need good physics, maths and practical skills, be able to read technical drawings and technical manuals, and be able to act quickly in an emergency. Your day-to-day tasks might include operating machinery, finding and fixing faults, handling materials, testing equipment and reacting to emergencies. Starting salaries range from £18,000 to £25,000.
If you have excellent communication and scientific skills, good commercial awareness and the ability to use your initiative, this career could be for you. Most environmental consultants work for consultancy firms, with some specialising in one field. Typical tasks might range from exploring the suitability of development sites to responding to environmental accidents. Starting salaries average £22,000.

This Level 2 Renewable Energy Diploma is accredited by NCFE and is an introduction to the renewables energy industry. Pathways on this one year programme include wind, wave, tidal, solar, hydroelectric and energy from waste and energy conservation.
With the Fylde coast already boasting 89 energy sector businesses now is a great time to train to move in to the renewables energy industry.
This course is aimed at school leavers aged 16 to 18 but is also open to adult students aged 19 and over looking to change career or up skill.
The course of study will be supported by industry site visits and guest speakers from the renewables industry including manufacturers and potential employers.
Lancashire Energy HQ is the latest new development by Blackpool and The Fylde College, a £10 million cutting edge facility with outstanding brand new facilities to support industry and local employers.
This Level 3 Renewable Energy Engineering Diploma is accredited by NCFE. This course provides you with a solid grounding and skills at advanced craft level to potentially join one of the 89 energy sectors within the Fylde coast. Perhaps your interest is wind farm technology and you would like to gain the skills to enable you to become a wind farm technician on or offshore. You may wish to learn about tidal energy and possibly get involved with the Fleetwood tidal barrage which is currently being planned at the river estuary.
